How To Use Facebook To Help Yourself Stay Healthy

Facebook is probably not the first thought that crosses your mind when you think of ways to stay healthy.  It is usually thought of as one of those things that keep you inside and sedentary when you should be outside and active.  But like most tools Facebook is all in how you use it.  Here are some ways that you can use Facebook to help yourself stay healthy.

Escapism

Using Facebook can be a form of escapism.  You can use it to get away from the stresses of everyday life, to forget all that and just unwind.  Escapism is healthy in small amounts.  Everyone escapes into music, television shows, or other distractions.  To get your mind off of the challenging parts of life for a little while, you could turn to Facebook.

Connection

You can also use Facebook to connect with other human beings.  This is essential to mental health.  Many people think that Facebook creates illusory connections with other people and to some extent this is true.  If you primarily communicate with others through this social networking site then you are not really connecting with anyone.  If, however, you use this site as a starting point for making friends or making plans and these friends and plans cross over into the real world then Facebook can be instrumental to your social activities which is good for your mental health.

MapMyRun

Facebook has a number of applications that can help you to stay healthy too.  One such application is MapMyRun.  It can be used by those who run, walk, jog, or bike.  This application allows you to search routes that other Facebook users have created in your area so that you can choose your own exercise path.  These paths come with descriptions so you know which ones have the best scenery or the lowest amount of traffic.  And if you do not find a route that is to your liking then you can just create your own.

Calorie Counter

This is another application but this one has you tracking your calories with the overall goal usually being weight loss.  Of course you can also use it for weight maintenance once you have reached your weight loss goal.  To begin, you input the food you eat and the water you drink.  Then you enter in any calories you burned off through physical activity and this application determines how it all pans out.

This application will tell you how many pounds you will lose each week if you eat a certain number of calories each day.  This way you can calculate how long it will take you to lose a certain amount of weight if you maintain a given diet.  It can be used for short term or long term weight loss goals.

These are some ways that you can use Facebook to help yourself stay healthy.  Most of these ways use Facebook as a tool for checking in and have you go out into the real world most of the time to stay healthy.  Facebook is just there to help you make plans and when you need a little escape.
