Facebook is probably not the first thought that crosses your mind when you think of ways to stay healthy.  It is usually thought of as one of those things that keep you inside and sedentary when you should be outside and active.  But like most tools Facebook is all in how you use it.  Here are some ways that you can use Facebook to help yourself stay healthy.

Escapism

Using Facebook can be a form of escapism.  You can use it to get away from the stresses of everyday life, to forget all that and just unwind.  Escapism is healthy in small amounts.  Everyone escapes into music, television shows, or other distractions.  To get your mind off of the challenging parts of life for a little while, you could turn to Facebook.

Connection

You can also use Facebook to connect with other human beings.  This is essential to mental health.  Many people think that Facebook creates illusory connections with other people and to some extent this is true.  If you primarily communicate with others through this social networking site then you are not really connecting with anyone.  If, however, you use this site as a starting point for making friends or making plans and these friends and plans cross over into the real world then Facebook can be instrumental to your social activities which is good for your mental health.
